What's KATAZOME?

In my workshop, the most traditional Japanese KATAZOME is applied.
The technique is said to be established in Kamakura period (1192-1332 A.D.).
It is widely developed and applied for
dyeing Kamishimo(:the most formed wear of Samurai) in Edo period(1615-1867 A.D.),
since it was effective to print the emblem(:mondokoro) on Kamishimo
which is specialized for each Daimyo and samurai family as the symbol of their status.

The element of KATAZOME technique is as follows.
First, it is made moulds with Washi(Japanese paper) as water proof by glue.
Patterns are printed when a dyestuff is stenciled in parts of cut off.
This technique is seen at Edo-komon, Japanese towel, Ryukyu-Bingata.

KATAZOME techinique (like, using Washi moulds, glutinous rice and rice bran) is
only one form which is seen in Japan.
We can say Japanese climate and Japanese diposition who look for delicate finish with fine-tuning
is appeared so much at this technique.
